Traditional Chiefs in Niger Urge Ban on Child Marriage

Some important news from Niger that didn’t get much press today:

Niger’s influential traditional chiefs have urged the government to draw up legislation which would stop girls being married off as young children, breaking ranks with Islamic groups in the mostly Muslim nation.

In Niger, a country with a 95% Muslim population, girls under the age of ten are often expected to marry to increase familial wealth and social standing.  Any move toward abolishing this institutionalized child rape is a good move.
