Nyack is a popular day trip destination for New Yorkers and the upper crust of New Jersey. The town sitting proudly on the Hudson boasts a plethora of fine restaurants, antique shops and books stores that lend it a kind of charm few north eastern cities are able to manage.
Indeed Nyack was always envisioned by planners and worthies to be the “New Orleans of The Hudson” and wandering along its quiet streets lined with colonial style homes that would pass for mansions anywhere else one can easily see the resemblance.
For those of us that have been to Nyack in the last few years it is also obvious that Nyack is rich, very liberal and filled with the fadishness that is the marriage of the two. A charming town filled with spoiled, bored teens who spend their time in the local super mall “slumming” and delving deeply into the thug sub-culture whose watered down version can be found in specialty shops. The spread of a violence worshiping “hood” mentality among the idle rich is a time bomb in our midsts.
Added to this is the local business penchant to hire illegals, a situation which attracts gangs that prey on those workers like MS-13, and you have a recipe for Nyack’s destruction. From WCBS:
NYACK, N.Y. (CBS/AP) ― Police say two people have been injured and five people arrested after dozens fought in the streets of the Rockland County village of Nyack.
Orangetown police say fights among 40 to 50 people broke out Wednesday afternoon.
It took police officers from seven departments to finally break up the fights, which continued across Nyack for an hour.
Police say some involved in the fight were armed with knives, bats and an ax.
They say one man was stabbed and hit with a claw hammer; a second person was hit in the head with a hammer.
Both victims were treated and released from a hospital.
Police say they have arrested five people, including one of the injured, on charges including disorderly conduct, menacing, trespassing and possession of marijuana.
Look at that, pot was involved. Shocking.
What’s more shocking is that 40-50 people armed with bats knives and at least one ax fought on the streets of a town where houses can go for over a million dollars, and only five were arrested. Police from seven departments arrived to break it up and were only able to arrest five, one of whom was injured.
The report is also interesting in that the rioters are described as “men” implying that these were all adults brawling on the streets. Young adults no doubt but adults nonetheless.
An hour of societal break down that couldn’t be contained by the local authorities in one of the ritziest places on Earth. No word on the cause yet but I’m sure it was something trivial. I sometimes laugh at the survivalists who insist there will be food riots in America, then a story like this comes along and scares me.

Sorry “rufus” I got this story from CBS and it’s complimented with my first hand knowledge of Nyack, where I spent many weekends with my wife. But I’m willing to listen, where am I wrong on this?

The “issue” was a riot where several people were injured and it was only by luck no one died. That’s my analysis, show me where I’m wrong.
Nyack is a nice neighborhood. One of the best in rockland if not the best. The kids in this riot are however not rich white kids. The kids in this riot are actually the children of often struggling immigrants or low income families. Don’t get me wrong, there are a few kids who are well off and wanna fit in. As far as Spring Valley goes, thats been a troubled neighborhood for years, but even Spring Valley has its beautiful peaceful areas.
“Struggling immigrants” kids don’t try to kill people in broad daylight. Word on the street is that this was gang violence, and plenty of rich White kids get involved with gangs. The incident started in the Nyack high school, the kids from Spring Valley came to fight over some girl. A Nyack girl who was likely “well off”
I’ve been to Nyack, I know it’s nice but it’s also full of drunks and kids who like getting drugged up. If you want me to believe that every kid involved in the riot was the son of a recent immigrants you’ll have to explain what country the parents Karl Dubisson of Nyack, James Armstrong of Spring Valley and Allen Dawson, also of Spring Valley come from. Are you having problems with Anglo-Saxons and Swedes importing a culture of gang violence here?
Police suspect Bloods and Crips involvement, your own papers state as much. If it turns out there were no well off kids involved in the actual violence, you may want to ask yourself who’s funding the Bloods and Crips and why they seem to consider Nyack part of their turf. Maybe all your good little kids should stop buying drugs from gang bangers.
I will say however that I didn’t imply Nyack wasn’t quite lovely, just that it was unprepared for what’s coming down the pike, and full of people with their heads in the sand.

Alright look, A curious reader should chill but Rob, with all due respect, the riot seriously was between low-income African-American gang members from Nyack and Spring Valley.
As someone who actually is one of the privileged, drunken white Nyack teenagers I can tell you unequivocally that our prissiness applies to our fear of gang violence.
I don’t mean to offer this as some racist condemnation of the low-income African-American community in Nyack, but merely to clear up some misconceptions; there is a REALLY shocking difference between left-of-center, upscale “downtown”, and poverty-stricken “DOWNtown”.
Since the post is five months old I’ll assume some more violence happened. So Frank, how do these gangs fund themselves and what are they fighting over?

To the first point, no, I’m just a late comer to the post through random googling, I’m happy to report we have had no other noteworthy incidents of gang violence :).
To your second point, I offer no rebuttal to your very valid point about funding gang members with drug money; however, I merely meant to point out misconceptions of rich white people entertaining delusions of gangland grandeur and can further report that on the local Nyack level gang activity is largely symbolic, as there have never been encroachments on “turf” from either Nyack or Spring Valley gang members.
The incident you referred to was admittably gang-related, but actually stemmed from an altercation between two non-gang members, who mutually had gang acquaintances.
Sorry Frank but I’ve met rich white kids from Nyack with those same delusions. I used to eat at Bourbon Street every Friday and shop at Ben Franklin books. Ask the bouncers if there’s no notable violent incidents, I know one who quit working the door of a downtown bar because of the violence.

Well the thing is, Nyack’s virtually gentrified since the ’70s and before, when it was a complete ghost-town/hell-hole, but don’t get me wrong, I think it’s horrible that in any area gang-conflict has to even be a consideration.
