Russia Deploying Chechen Units into Georgia, May be Linked to Turkey Pipeline Blast

If there were still any doubts as to the goals of the Russian invasion of Georgia this TimesOnline report should make it clear that the brutal extermination of Georgian civilians is a key priority. Why else bring in troops known throughout the region as the worst of the worst?

“My name’s Shrek,” said the soldier, his eyes glazed and staring as he cradled his Kalashnikov rifle.

The nickname given by his comrades to the bald, pug-eared soldier was the only moment of light relief during a day of tense drama in which The Times witnessed Russia breaching the ceasefire agreement over South Ossetia at will.

At a checkpoint set up by the Russian Army on the approach to the city of Gori from the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, an armoured personnel carrier blocked the road and riflemen had fanned out in the surrounding bushes, their weapons trained on anyone who approached.

All were ethnic Chechens, whose reputation for pitiless brutality in war made them feared throughout the Caucasus.

The checkpoint was the first evidence that the deal brokered hours earlier by President Sarkozy of France was being ignored. Shortly after President Saakashvili had signed the agreement, Russian tanks and troops rolled into Gori.

The ceasefire had specified that both the Georgian and Russian armies should withdraw after the five days of bitter fighting. But the Russians had moved up to twenty tanks, armoured personnel carriers and hundreds of soldiers miles into Georgia to occupy Gori and take control of the road leading to Tbilisi.

One soldier, Yuri, said that his unit, part of the 42nd Chechen Division, had fought for the whole five-day campaign to wrest South Ossetia from Georgian control. Asked why they had taken Gori now, he said: “We were given an order and we are following it. We don’t know how long we will be here.”

Smoke rose behind him as buildings burnt in the villages surrounding Gori. There were also prolonged bursts of automatic gunfire, although Georgian troops had abandoned the city in a panic on Monday night.

A stream of Georgians fled the area in cars, tractors and lorries, taking what belongings they could. A black Volga car crammed with passengers carried two more escapers on its roof.

One elderly couple were walking, the woman clearly in shock, her face swollen and one eye badly damaged. She pointed backwards and said: “They are killing people there, the Chechens and the Ossetians.”

The introduction of the Chechen forces is a move designed both to terrorize Georgians and bring in troops who are used to carrying out savage orders in barbarous conditions.

Additionally ThreatsWatch makes a compelling case that the recent Communist PKK bombing of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline in Turkey was part of Putin’s plan to destabilize Georgia. It’s a must read.

Is this going to spill out of Georgia soon?

Ethnic Georgian Villages in South Ossetia Burned and Looted

From Human Rights Watch:

In South Ossetia, Human Rights Watch researchers traveling on the evening of August 12 on the road from the town of Java to Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, witnessed terrifying scenes of destruction in four villages that used to be populated exclusively by ethnic Georgians. According to the few remaining local residents, South Ossetian militias that were moving along the road looted the Georgian villages and set them on fire. Human Rights Watch saw numerous vehicles carrying South Ossetian militia members, as well as Russian military transports moving in the direction of Tskhinvali.

Numerous houses in the villages of Kekhvi, Nizhnie Achaveti, Verkhnie Achaveti and Tamarasheni had been burnt down over the last day – Human Rights Watch researchers saw the smoldering remnants of the houses and household items. The villages were virtually deserted, with the exception of a few elderly and incapacitated people who stayed behind either because they were unable to flee or because they were trying to save their belongings and cattle.

“The remaining residents of these destroyed ethnic Georgian villages are facing desperate conditions, with no means of survival, no help, no protection, and nowhere to go,” said Tanya Lokshina at Human Rights Watch.

Russian Barbarians Sack Gori

And you thought the war was over. Not content with purposefully bombing civilians the barbarians unleashed on the Georgian people by the Kremlin have begun the systematic rape of the tiny nation with the sack of Gori:

Georgian Security Council Chief Alexander Lomaia said that the Russian military bombed Gori Wednesday morning and entered the city. The Russian military then let paramilitaries into Gori who started massive looting.

An AP reporter outside the city of Gori saw the convoy speeding past and heading south.

The accusation came less than 12 hours after Georgia’s president said he accepted a cease-fire plan brokered by France. The Russian president said that Russia was halting military action because Georgia had paid enough for its attack on South Ossetia, a separatist region along the Russian border with close ties to Moscow.

[…]

In the west, Georgian troops acknowledged Wednesday they had completely pulled out of a small section of Abkhazia, a second separatist region — a development that leaves the entire area in the hands of the Russian-backed separatists.

A few dozen separatist fighters moved into Georgian territory on Wednesday, planting their flag on a bridge over the Inguri River.

“The border has been along this river for 1,000 years,” separatist official Ruslan Kishmaria told AP on Wednesday. He said Georgia would have to accept the new border and taunted the departed Georgian forces by saying they had received “American training in running away.”

Georgia’s Security Council chief Alexander Lomaia said that Russia had moved 50 tanks into Gori, a strategic town 15 miles from the border with South Ossetia, violating the new accord.

Russia’s deputy chief of General Staff Col.-Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn denied any tanks were in Gori. He said Russians went into the city to try to implement the truce with local Georgian officials but could not find any.

An APTN television crew in Gori saw some Russian armored vehicles Wednesday morning near a military base there. Puffs of smoke in the air indicated some military action.

An AP photographer saw several Russian troops and two armored vehicles on the northern outskirts of the city. His driver went further up the road and ran into Russian military volunteers, who warned that Russian forces would soon shell Gori. The two retreated south but no immediate shelling could be heard.

Seeing the weak western response to their provocations the Russians have decided to escalate their attacks, and are reportedly eyeing the Ukraine as their next target. Putin seems to be willing to push until America or Europe push back, and unfortunately for the world, Russian tanks will be getting airlifted into Canada before America meets the Russian threat head on.

Pravda, Huffington Post Spreading Neo-Soviet Propaganda

They must get the same talking points sent to them. How else do you explain the eerily similar wording of these two screeds accusing Republicans of starting the war between Georgia and Russia as a way to shore up support for John McCain in November?

From Putin propaganda outfit Pravda:

The USA is pursuing absolutely different goals, and the creation of the Great Georgia is surely not on its list. The Republicans organized the provocation to portray Russia as a monster on the globe on the threshold of the November elections. This plays into the hands of John McCain, who openly says that “Russia’s imperial ambition” needs to be curbed.

Now this from Blake Fleetwood writing at HuffPo:

In classic “Wag The Dog” scenario there is a neat little war brewing between American and Russian proxies, and real Russian troops, in the Caucacus Mountains on the Russian border.

It couldn’t come at a better time for the Republicans.

McCain gets to act and talk tough against the Russians, while Obama is on vacation in Hawaii, issuing “can’t we all get along statements.”

It perfectly augments Republican campaign points: Obama is not ready. He is not tough, experienced enough to deal with a dangerous world.

McCain knows he can’t win the election on Iraq or Iran or the economy. Republicans need a real boogeyman — the Russian bear — armed with nuclear weapons — to really scare the bejesus out of the American voters.

Pretty close, though Pravda is able to be more succinct. Alex Jones has also gotten on board with the Republican plot thesis, so they’re in good company.
