The Maxpedition Kodiak Gearslinger is one of the larger packs Maxpedition makes and is a decent choice for a main pack or bug out bag. Like I’ve said I’m an army surplus gear kind of guy but I’ve gotten some requests for information on good, rugged packs and the Kodiak seems to fit the bill, with some caveats.
Here’s a review from Kev at Survivalist Boards that lists the pros and cons. There’s an accompanying video:
Mil-Spec Monkey has a review of the bag that points out the main flaw of the bag is that it encourages overloading. Since the Kodiak is an enlarged version of the Sitka users who like the Kodiak may want to scale back and buy the smaller Sitka. Mil-Spec Monkey has a video from the Shot Show that shows the bag side by side for comparison:
This review by James Yeager of Tactical Response Gear points out one of the best features of the bag is it’s quickness:
Again the one caveat is that this bag in particular isn’t made for camping or long distance hiking. It makes a good emergency bag but it’s simply not designed for large loads to be moved comfortably. For tactical carry it’s a go, but for camping and moving loads stick to your most comfortable pack. I like my ruck personally, but I may grab a Gearslinger in the future. If you’re going to be in an urban environment and want to keep some basic gear with you and easily accessible, or are expecting trouble and need a tactical pack the Gearslingers are for you.
