Taiwan Missile Crisis?

From the Times Online:

Taiwan appears ready to unveil at next week’s National Day a cruise missile capable of hitting targets in China. The move is likely to raise tensions between the countries. A defence ministry informant said it was probable that the “tactical shore-based missile for fire suppression” would be displayed in Taipei next Wednesday when the island holds its first National Day military parade in 16 years.

Tension has been rising between China and Taiwan, which split amid civil war in 1949. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has threatened to attack if the democratic island takes steps to formalise its de facto independence.

Western analysts say the weapon being discussed is the Hsiung Feng IIE surface-to-surface missile, which Taiwan has reportedly tested but has not displayed or deployed. It is believed to have a range of about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles), which would enable it to strike China’s financial centre and biggest city, Shanghai. However, some analysts wonder if the missile can be fired successfully without US satellite guidance technology. (AP)

As Japan begins beef up it’s military capability in the face of American withdrawal from the far east, and reports that nationalist factions within the Chinese Communist Party are pushing for an invasion of Taiwan out of fear that U.N. recognition of the breakaway republic will undermine their rule the far east may be the flashpoint that brings the world to war.

Japan has recently signed a defense agreement with Australia, and is currently in a dispute with China over deep sea natural gas resources which has led the CCP to stage anti-Japanese riots, perhaps as preparation of the Chinese population for a war with Japan. Japan and Taiwan are both united in opposition to Chinese and their client state North Korea’s military aggression. Should things come to a head over Taiwan, Japan and Australia, along with the U.S., may be forced to act.

“Like it or Not, Lines Are Being Drawn”

So says China Confidential in discussing Japan’s new efforts to forge alliances in the face of China’s growing military and economic influence in the region and no doubt Beijing’s deepening ties to Russia From China Confidential:

China’s economic and military rise is pushing India and Japan together, as shown by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s address on Wednesday to a special session of India’s parliament.

In a tacit criticism of China, Abe proposed a new four-way “arc of freedom and prosperity” that would bring together Australia, India, Japan and the United States. He called for a “broader Asia” partnership of democracies that would include India, the US and Australia–but leave out China.

Abe’s speech kicked off a high-profile, three-day visit that aims to boost trade between Asia’s largest and third largest economies. About 200 businessmen are accompanying him on the trip.

“This partnership is an association in which we share fundamental values such as freedom, democracy and respect for basic human rights as well as strategic interests,” Abe told lawmakers and diplomats.

“By Japan and India coming together in this way, this ‘broader Asia’ will evolve into an immense network spanning the entirety of the Pacific Ocean, incorporating the United States of America and Australia.”

The Japanese navy is due to take part for the first time in joint US-India exercises to be held in the Bay of Bengal next month.

China Threatens to Crash U.S. Dollar!

Angry at the temerity of the U.S. demanding China stop artificially rigging the value of the Yuan to give themselves an advantage in trade, China’s Communist party is threatening to use it’s vast holdings of U.S. treasury notes to collapse the dollar’s value and destroy our economy. From the Telegraph:

Two officials at leading Communist Party bodies have given interviews in recent days warning – for the first time – that Beijing may use its $1.33 trillion (£658bn) of foreign reserves as a political weapon to counter pressure from the US Congress.

Shifts in Chinese policy are often announced through key think tanks and academies.

Described as China’s “nuclear option” in the state media, such action could trigger a dollar crash at a time when the US currency is already breaking down through historic support levels.

It would also cause a spike in US bond yields, hammering the US housing market and perhaps tipping the economy into recession. It is estimated that China holds over $900bn in a mix of US bonds.

Xia Bin, finance chief at the Development Research Centre (which has cabinet rank), kicked off what now appears to be government policy with a comment last week that Beijing’s foreign reserves should be used as a “bargaining chip” in talks with the US.

“Of course, China doesn’t want any undesirable phenomenon in the global financial order,” he added.

He Fan, an official at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, went even further today, letting it be known that Beijing had the power to set off a dollar collapse if it choose to do so.

“China has accumulated a large sum of US dollars. Such a big sum, of which a considerable portion is in US treasury bonds, contributes a great deal to maintaining the position of the dollar as a reserve currency. Russia, Switzerland, and several other countries have reduced the their dollar holdings.

“China is unlikely to follow suit as long as the yuan’s exchange rate is stable against the dollar. The Chinese central bank will be forced to sell dollars once the yuan appreciated dramatically, which might lead to a mass depreciation of the dollar,” he told China Daily.

The threats play into the presidential electoral campaign of Hillary Clinton, who has called for restrictive legislation to prevent America being “held hostage to economic decicions being made in Beijing, Shanghai, or Tokyo”.

An odd statement from Hillary, whose husband has his own debt to pay to the Chinese. But she is right in theory, though Japan as a strong ally should be allowed to invest in our booming economy, allowing China to buy dollars was never a good idea.

The Telegraph blog has more on this, including an excellent comments section. Synopsis: The dollar won’t collapse but we’re in for a bumpy ride.

China Backing Syria’s Claim to Golan Heights

It’ll be a long hot summer in Israel if China decides to back Syria to the hilt, so to speak. With the tiny democracy surrounded by Islamists the last thing they need is Syria emboldened by support from the rising dragon. From fellow anti-communist blogger Z.O.C.:

As if the Jewish state of Israel had enough problems on its hands, the likes of Communist China has reaffirmed its support for its client state-Syria to take back the Golan Heights. Now there have also been reports of Prime Traitor Olmert preparing talks with the pro-Soviet Baathist dictator and his leadership on the Golan Heights. Israel is certainly making a mistake should it give back the Golan Heights to Syria. With the likes of Communist China (and likely “former” Soviet Russia) behind it, this spells trouble for Israel, as the two Communist superpowers are encouraging their proxies to encircle the Jewish state ranging from Hamas, the “moderate” Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), the PLO-front group Hezbollah and their client state-Syria. Only a Useful Idiot would want to embrace the totalitarian partnership of Communist China, “former” Soviet Russia, their client states in the Middle East and their terrorist proxies, er, “freedom fighters”.

Anyway, here’s straight from the horse’s mouth from Syria receiving support from Communist China to take control of the Golan Heights:

China Supports Syria’s right to restore the occupied Golan

Here’s the article that the above is talking about. In it China’s Premier announces the communist nation’s intent to boost economic and political ties with the Baathist regime, and voices support for Syria’s claim on the Golan Heights. The Heights are strategically significant, and Syrian control of the heights could spell disaster for Israel in the event of another war in the region.

Red China Arming Islamic Militants in Iraq and Afghanistan!

And we move a step closer to WWIII. From The Washington Times:

New intelligence reveals China is covertly supplying large quantities of small arms and weapons to insurgents in Iraq and the Taliban militia in Afghanistan, through Iran.
U.S. government appeals to China to check some of the arms shipments in advance were met with stonewalling by Beijing, which insisted it knew nothing about the shipments and asked for additional intelligence on the transfers. The ploy has been used in the past by China to hide its arms-proliferation activities from the United States, according to U.S. officials with access to the intelligence reports.
Some arms were sent by aircraft directly from Chinese factories to Afghanistan and included large-caliber sniper rifles, millions of rounds of ammunition, rocket-propelled grenades and components for roadside bombs, as well as other small arms.
The Washington Times reported June 5 that Chinese-made HN-5 anti-aircraft missiles were being used by the Taliban.
According to the officials, the Iranians, in buying the arms, asked Chinese state-run suppliers to expedite the transfers and to remove serial numbers to prevent tracing their origin. China, for its part, offered to transport the weapons in order to prevent the weapons from being interdicted.
The weapons were described as “late-model” arms that have not been seen in the field before and were not left over from Saddam Hussein’s rule in Iraq.
U.S. Army specialists suspect the weapons were transferred within the past three months.
The Bush administration has been trying to hide or downplay the intelligence reports to protect its pro-business policies toward China, and to continue to claim that China is helping the United States in the war on terrorism. U.S. officials have openly criticized Iran for the arms transfers but so far there has been no mention that China is a main supplier.

Communists and Islamists again caught working together to attack U.S. interests. How long before China, through their Islamist proxy fighters, weaken our military enough to make their move against a helpless Taiwan and Japan? Three years? Two?

Then what, Hawaii? Alaska? California?

If their giving advanced weapons to Islamic terrorists, what are they giving to the communist regimes in Latin America? And what are our government officials doing about this? Nothing:

John Tkacik, a former State Department official now with the Heritage Foundation, said the Chinese arms influx “continues 10 years of willful blindness in both Republican and Democrat administrations to China’s contribution to severe instability in the Middle East and South Asia.”
Mr. Tkacik said the administration should be candid with the American people about China’s arms shipments, including Beijing’s provision of man-portable air-defense missiles through Iran and Syria to warring factions in Lebanon and Gaza.
Apologists for China within the government said the intelligence reports were not concrete proof of Chinese and Iranian government complicity.

China, Iran, Venezuela, Al-Qaeda. Our enemies are legion and worse, allied against us. Isn’t it time we started taking this war seriously?

Isn’t it time Bush explained why he apparently isn’t?
