Christopher Hitchens has never done a greater service to mankind than when he coined the phrase sinister piffle. He used it to describe the loathsome anti-Semitism of Cindy Sheehan back when the media gave her a platform for her “anti-war” protests but I have always thought that it was a turn of phrase that deserves to be added to the lexicon of punditry. Sheehan’s sinister piffle was nonsense that could have (and I would argue did) have serious consequences for millions of people when taken seriously. Her efforts to mainstream anti-Semitism (going so far as to have White nationalists involved in her protest, a fact the complicit media ignored) have helped foster the environment of Jew hatred we have today.
Similarly, the recent report released by what we could be excused to have assumed to be the freshman social studies class from Howard Zinn high school (located in central Berkeley between the John Philips father/daughter play center and the Jerry Garcia memorial medical marijuana dispensary) but was in actuality the product of a joint venture between what are believed to be professional researchers from Duke University and U.N.C. is sinister piffle. Anti-Terror Lessons of American Muslims is a poorly researched piece of Jihadist apologia which makes a number of spurious claims and concludes that the threat of terrorism is overblown. It implicitly recommends Americans simply stop worrying about Militant Islam, because Militant Islam is not a threat to Americans.
Piffle! And sinister piffle at that, because unless we believe that the authors of this dull and hamfisted regurgitation of the great Progressive Articles of Faith (The West is always wrong, the “other” is always right, violence is always a reaction to Western aggression) are simply so immersed in the raw post-modernist sewage of academic Marxism the only explanation for a report that so plainly distorts the facts about radicalization and the threat of terror by American Muslims is that it’s propaganda designed to cover for those same terrorists.
One of the most extraordinary claims made by the authors (David Schanzer, Charles Kurzman and Ebrahim Moosa) is that homegrown extremism is an exaggerated threat. They can make that claim because by their own admission they do not count fund-raising or Jihad enabling activities as terrorism and they don’t term any person or group radicalized until they’ve been proven to have participated in violence. They also seem to think the 13 dead and 30 wounded soldiers at Ft. Hood is no big deal.
Understand that this report is claiming that Muslims who call for the death of gays are not radicals until they actually kill one. Rifqa Berry’s parents are not radicals until she’s dead. Those that support the aims and efforts of Al-Qaeda or Hezbollah or any other militant Islamist group aren’t radicals even if they are financially supporting those groups’ murderous efforts. No one’s a radical until the blood flows and the bullets fly. No one is a threat until they have already made good on one.
The three authors’ agenda is as transparent as their attempts to rewrite history with their talk of all the efforts Muslims have been making to de-radicalize young men. This is radical politics disguised as shoddy academics and Duke and U.N.C. should be absolutely ashamed to have their names attached to such sinister piffle.
The Investigative Project on Terrorism has a in-depth debunking of the more outrageous claims, and points out that the paper credits known radical organizations as sources including the Islamic Circle of North America which is the group from which the American Muslims caught in Pakistan were spawned.
h/t Act of America – Raleigh chapter.
A good question but I would put forward that it is America, not just Obama, that doesn’t understand the full scope of the war we face. Obama’s noncommittal toe in the water approach to warfare is a symptom of the Fortress America fantasy that sees America as so powerful that we can actually give away much of our power and still be safe from the world. It is not just the left but many on the fringe right think that Islamism, Communism, eco-terror and a host of other threats to us cannot effectively destroy America so they simply aren’t worth confronting. Worse they adopt a pose of indifference to these enemies in the vain hope that sans “provocations” from us (like buying oil and exporting those gauche ideas of liberty for all and free market economics) everyone would simply love us too much to ever want to harm us.
Such Lotus-Eater like insouciance concerning America and her place in the world is not a product of Barack Obama so much as President Obama and his election is the culmination of the ascendancy of this school of thought. It will be at least three years until we have leadership that takes our defense seriously and in the mean time we will suffer a withering barage of attacks from enemies that cannot even be named:
On the other hand, if we are now at war, as Obama belatedly concedes, against whom are we warring? “We are at war against al-Qaida,” says the president.
Really? But what does that mean? Was the previous month’s “isolated extremist,” the Fort Hood killer, part of al-Qaida? When it came to spiritual advice, he turned to the same Yemeni-based American-born imam as the Pantybomber, but he didn’t have a fully paid-up membership card.
[…]
What did the Pantybomber have a membership card in? Well, he was president of the Islamic Society of University College, London. Kafeel Ahmed, who died after driving a burning jeep into the concourse of Glasgow Airport, had been president of the Islamic Society of Queen’s University, Belfast. Yassin Nassari, serving three years in jail for terrorism, was president of the Islamic Society of the University of Westminster. Waheed Arafat Khan, arrested in the 2006 Heathrow terror plots that led to Americans having to put their liquids and gels in those little plastic bags, was president of the Islamic Society of London Metropolitan University.
Doesn’t this sound like a bigger problem than “al-Qaida,” whatever that is? The president has now put citizens of Nigeria on the secondary-screening list. Which is tough on Nigerian Christians, who have no desire to blow up your flight to Detroit. Aside from the highly localized Tamil terrorism of India and Sri Lanka, suicide bombing is a phenomenon entirely of Islam. The broader psychosis that manifested itself only the other day in an axe murderer breaking into a Danish cartoonist’s home to kill him because he objects to his cartoon is, likewise, a phenomenon of Islam. This is not to say (to go wearily through the motions) that all Muslims are potential suicide bombers and axe murderers, but it is to state the obvious – that this “war” is about the intersection of Islam and the West, and its warriors are recruited in the large pool of young Muslim manpower, not in Yemen and Afghanistan so much as in Copenhagen and London.
But the president of the United States cannot say that because he is overinvested in a fantasy – that, if only that Texan moron Bush had read Khalid Sheikh Mohammed his Miranda rights and bowed as low as Obama did to the Saudi king, we wouldn’t have all these problems. So now Obama says, “We are at war.” But he cannot articulate any war aims or strategy because they would conflict with his illusions. And so we will stagger on, playing defense, pulling more and more items out of our luggage – tweezers, shoes, shampoo, snow globes, suppositories – and reacting to every new provocation with greater impositions upon the citizenry.
We’re so strong we can afford to be weak many say. It is the exercise of our strength that causes problems. This is the progressive version of the meek will inherit the earth which while a nice theological point to debate is a foolhardy defense policy. Unfortunately America will have to learn that the hard way.
No cries of neo-colonialism from the left as George Galloway and his convoy of supposedly peaceful activists comprised mainly of White Europeans and American anti-Semities allied with militant Islamists took four Egyptian officers hostage and murdered one of them in clashes near the Egypt/Gaza border:
Protests over an international aid convoy to Gaza, led by George Galloway, turned violent today killing one Egyptian soldier and leaving dozens injured.
The Britain-based Viva Palestina convoy included more than 500 international activists bringing humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip in protest at the Israeli blockade of the coastal strip.
Scuffles between activists and Egyptian police broke out last night after part of the convoy was barred from entering Gaza. Hundreds of Palestinians rushed to the border to support the convoy, hurling rocks and opening fire at the Egyptian guards from across the border.
Activists said that one Egyptian soldier was killed in a gunfight, and that at least three Palestinians were taken to hospitals. Up to 50 activists were treated for minor injuries, and several have been detained by authorities.
Egypt has come under fire recently for supporting the Israeli blockade, and stepping up efforts along the Egyptian border to stop tunnel smugglers from moving supplies into Gaza. Egypt’s construction of an underground barrier to cut off the tunnels has drawn criticism from a number of neighbouring Arab states, who call the barrier a “wall of death.â€
Egypt maintains that it is protecting its borders, and that aid to Gaza should be sent via internationally recognized channels.
One Jordanian activist who took part in the convoy said the group had refused to enter Gaza through its crossings with Israel, as they refused to recognize Israeli control of Gaza.
Speaking to Sky News Mr Galloway said that Egyptians had breached the agreement they had made with the convoy.
“It’s completely unconscionable,†he said.
Of course Galloway doesn’t think bringing a small army of thugs into a sovereign country and challenging that government’s authority with arms he has worked to keep out of the hands of his fellow citizens of the United Kingdom is at all questionable morally.
Via Atlas Shrugs here’s a video of the report:
Atlas also has a photo essay of a Palestinian market that debunks the starving Palestinian myth.
Speaking of debunking myths, this essay on the history of “Palestine” is a must read for anyone who really wants to understand the conflict.
Yes, Code Pink was involved. Oddly they have no press release on the murder of the Egyptian on their site.
The other day I visited a forum where someone claimed that we shouldn’t support Israel because of the massive amounts of sexual slavery that take place there. I chimed in that America has its own sexual slavery problem and the person wasn’t crying over that, at which point it was implied I was a “secret Jew” Zionist agent.
While I’m not a Jew, I will point out here that I am a Zionist insofar as I believe that Jews need a refuge from a world that goes through cycles of anti-Semitism. I also believe that Jews have a historic claim to Israel (proven by archeology) whereas Muslim claims of being in any area prior to Jews or Christians is based on Islamic theology which states that Islam was the first true religion of the first humans and all other faiths are perversions of the truth. In addition, Islamic theology teaches Muslims that Islamic culture is scientifically superior to other cultures and this leads to Muslims incorporating the achievements of other cultures into their own after conquest by claiming they discovered them in the first place. The idea that Muslims invented the concept of zero (it was actually introduced to Muslims by Hindus) is an example of this changing of history. Thus, the claim on “Palestine” and the temples there is no different than Islamic claims on America or Europe. They are theologically correct but historically inaccurate.
In other words, I support Israel, there is no such thing as “Palestine,” and Muslims have no more claim to the so-called holy lands than Americans have to Japan. This isn’t to say that I support financial aid to Israel, whose socialist system is propped up by us, but I do support military aid to the little country. I also think all aid to Islamic counties that do not have some sort of Republican system of government that recognizes the rights of non-Muslim citizens should be cut immediately.
But Israel is necessary. It is necessary because even in place like New York and California, liberal bastions of supposed tolerance, I’ve seen the rise of anti-Semitism: Jewish cemeteries desecrated, synagogues burned, and Jews murdered simply for being Jewish. This is on our own shores, in our very republic. Via NewsReal Blog, here’s a compilation of some of the incidents I often allude to when debating this point:
The truth is that anti-Semitism is increasing and it is not isolated to any one country or political persuasion. Many Leftists, Libertarians, Communists, Socialists, Paleo-cons and frankly even Wiccans and environmentalists I have met all agree on one thing. The Jews are evil, in their estimation, and they are siding with Islamists in a coming global intifada against them. Within our lifetime we will see a new holocaust, driven by academic Marxists who have convinced the world that there is some “evil” plot by Jews to make the world less peaceful and this plot is at the root of Islam’s war against the West.
Just yesterday I received a press release from Americans Against Hate that accused a liberal Florida City Councilwoman of making outrageous statements that just a decade ago would have been considered unseemly outside of neo-Nazi circles:
(Davie, FL) According to Jeff Rubinoff, the President of the Davie/Cooper City Republican Club, at a holiday party for the group, he engaged in a heated discussion with Town of Davie Councilmember Susan Starkey over a Davie street sign that had been given to the Hamas-related Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
According to Rubinoff, Starkey told him that, until the federal government and the FBI stop working with CAIR, the group would be able to keep its sign. She said that she would only distance herself from CAIR and help to remove the sign, if she saw proof that the FBI had stopped working with CAIR.
Starkey was sent the proof she was asking for, which according to Rubinoff included numerous reports regarding the FBI’s severing of its ties to CAIR and information showing how leaders in the U.S. Congress have spoken out against CAIR.
As recent as the end of last year, CAIR was named by the U.S. Justice Department a co-conspirator in a federal trial dealing with the financing of millions of dollars to Hamas. At the end of the trial, all of the defendants were found guilty on all charges.
Starkey, according to Rubinoff, has not responded to the information.
Starkey’s support of the Hamas-associated CAIR may be due to her apparent disdain for the Jewish community. According to Rubinoff, during Starkey’s talk with him, the conversation quickly deteriorated into an anti-Semitic rant, where Starkey charged that “Jews are trying to convert everyone.â€
Americans Against Hate (AAH) Chairman Joe Kaufman stated, “Councilwoman Starkey’s feelings are obviously blinding her judgment with regard to the security of the citizens whom she was voted into office to protect. She should apologize to the Jewish community for her hurtful statement, and she should apologize to the entire community for allowing a group connected to terrorism to have a street sign in its name.â€
It is a refrain I’ve heard too often in the last few weeks, the wistful fantasy that we can avoid Islamic animosity by siding with Muslims against Jews and Israel. It is moral cowardice inflamed by the acceptance of the petty bigotry that has become a faddish political stance among those that see themselves as part of the cultural elite. The left and factions of the right will make war on the Jews in the name of Islam in the hopes that Muslims will spare them from the global conflagration the world is speeding toward. It is a complete misunderstanding of the imperialist impulse of unreformed Islam, but more, it is an easy way for the West to vent frustrations at its decline by blaming the one group it has complete power over. The West cannot dislodge Muslims from Europe, and Europe will soon (within decades if not years) collapse into a new Dark Ages due to their self-balkanization, welfare based economies, and cultural malaise. America is in no better shape. But we can fire up our ovens for one last orgy of genocide.
In the coming years Muslims will become more than the “existential threat to the West” that pundits often write about. When your local government has to lay off half its police force because tax revenues are declining they will control areas of your cities just as they do in Europe and England now. Next year, food shortages and economic depression are being predicted by many smart people (myself included, I say humbly) and the E.P.A.’s new environmental regulations virtually guarantee rolling brownouts and entire neighborhoods gone dark as Americans struggle to pay exorbitant energy prices. We will slip into second world status and people will look for a scapegoat. The Jews have already been set forward by the West as our scapegoat on the recommendation of the Muslims we have decided will inherit what’s left of Western civilization after we allow it to collapse.
It is my hope that Israel will be a refuge for Jews when the anti-Semitism here leads to waves of violence. But it is temporary. The Jews are being set up to die. Muslims, leftists and the “old right” will soon have blood on their hands physically, not just metaphorically. The Christians think this will be their end of days and they might be right because as go the Jews so will go the rest of the West. The coming war against the Jews will not be an ending, but the beginning of the end of all of us.
